Fredericton Hertiage Trust

Preserving Fredericton’s Story
Founded in 1972 in response to serious threats to Fredericton’s remarkable built heritage, including plans to redevelop the downtown core, the Fredericton Heritage Trust has spent nearly half a century advocating for the protection of the places that shape our community’s identity. From saving City Hall by a single vote to speaking out after the loss of the nearly 200-year-old Risteen Building in 2019, the Trust understands how fragile our heritage can be and remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding it.

Today, we are a volunteer-driven, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the natural, historical, and architectural heritage of the Capital Region of New Brunswick. Through advocacy, education, and hands-on engagement, we champion the conservation of historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and community landmarks. Over the years, we’ve produced walking tour booklets, a residential architecture restoration guide, and a variety of educational programs, while also annually recognizing individuals and businesses for outstanding heritage preservation. Supported by an active volunteer board, we hold monthly public meetings and warmly welcome new members, volunteers, and ideas as we work to ensure Fredericton’s heritage remains vibrant and valued for generations to come.

Our Mandate
  • To preserve, protect and promote the heritage of Fredericton and area.
  • To identify and recognize examples of heritage preservation.
  • To educate the public (especially children) as to the importance of our built and natural heritage.

Preservation
Safeguarding What Matters

We identify and protect Fredericton’s most at-risk heritage properties, advocating for policies and practices that prevent demolition and promote adaptive reuse. Every preserved building strengthens our cultural identity and reduces environmental impact.

Education
Heritage in the Classroom

From curriculum-aligned lesson plans to guided walking tours, we make Fredericton’s history accessible and engaging for learners of all ages. Our resources connect local stories to larger themes in architecture, culture, and sustainability.

Advocacy
A Voice for Our Built Heritage

Through connecting civic policy and community action, FHT works to influence decisions that affect Fredericton’s historic places. Our advocacy ensures that heritage remains a priority in urban planning and development.

Engagement
Bringing Heritage to Life

We connect the community to its local heritage through events, storytelling, tours, and volunteer opportunities. We strive to make it easy (and fun!) to get involed.
