York Street Audio Tour - Gilman Building

York Street itself now beckons, so we move southwards one block along the western side of York. Many small stores today carry on the tradition of small businesses. For example, those stores in the middle of the block stand on the site of the Commercial Hotel, built in 1850 by George Atherton. The hotel operated until 1913, when the building was sold. A large yard and stabling facilities helped care for forty horses. Golding's Livery Stables also rented out horses and carriages.

Just before King Street, at the north-west corner of York and King Streets, is the brick Gilman Building. The year 1905 appears with the Gilman name high up on the façade facing York Street. George Gilman was a prominent lumberman from the late 1800’s and he ran his businesses from here with his sons.
