521/527 Charlotte Streets

There are only a few mid-19th century semi-detached houses such as this in Fredericton, but what sets these apart is the story that the roofs tell about how a building evolves over time. While the roof configuration of 521Charlotte with its low gable and Scottish dormer would have originally covered both halves of the entire structure, during the 1870’s the owner of the separate residence at 527 Charlotte felt the desire to either add more usable space to the third floor, or renovate in the current architectural fashion (which was then the Second Empire style with its mansard roof and decorative dormers), or perhaps both. This is the best visible example in the City of a "before & after."
