185/187 Charlotte Street

Although Fredericton’s Old town plat boasts a significant number of Second Empire houses, this pre-1882 example is one of the most novel in the City. Designed with a two-bay front façade (the side porches are almost surely a later addition), the pair of projections creates a dynamic juxtaposition; the left bay sporting 45° walls with a full mansard roof and dormers, while the right bay is rectangular in plan with a flat two-storey wall above the double entry door - the mansard roof only on the sides. This house makes an interesting architectural transition between the buildings at 176 York Street and 767 Brunswick Street.
