Heritage Icons

The Fredericton Heritage Icons Program is designed to recognize significant aspects of our history or contributions to our cultural identity that have won a lasting place in our minds and memories.

Background
In 2002, The National Trust South Australia began an annual Heritage Icons List to recognize and protect items "that have made a significant contribution to South Australia’s cultural identity." The concept of a heritage or cultural icons list has been adopted by the Heritage Trusts of most Australian States.

The idea is beginning to spread beyond Australia. It is believed that Fredericton Heritage Trust's initiative is the first formal Heritage Icons Program in Canada.

Objectives
The program is designed to recognize significant aspects of our social, economic, cultural and natural heritage, as Fredericton Heritage Icons. Such recognition of these items as Icons will promote a broader awareness of our heritage and an understanding of our cultural identity. Such increased awareness it is hoped, will encourage the protection of the icons.
